Hi everybody,

on my new sheevaplug i boot debian lenny from a sd card.
i installed sucessfull lighttpd as webserver and now I want to test a webcam.

I installed webcam-server as it is described on this page: http://plugcomputer.org/plugwiki/index.php/Webcams
(but i did not compiled a new kernel, i hope I didn't need this with debian lenny?)

On the web-browser I only get a blank screen with the message "connecting.... please wait"
but no picture of my webcam.

I installed also dov4l to test the cam.
when I type "dov4l -q" I get the following output:

There's a few bugs in ubuntu's bugtracker about webcam-server:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webcam-server

I specifically suffer this one, which I've added some [hopefully helpful] comments near the bottom for anyone knowlegable enough to fix it:

I'm nearly 7 months late to this thread, but regarding this: "I compiled mjpg-streamer, and installed it", I have a question about instructions.  I've followed this older howto (using Michelmeyer's Debian on SD):

http://www.sunspot.co.uk/Projects/SWEEX/slug/notes/Debian_notes.html

Essentially, I've done this:
apt-get install imagemagick
cd /usr/src
svn co https://mjpg-streamer.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/mjpg-streamer
cd jmpg-streamer
make clean all

I get the following error:
In file included from v4l2uvc.c:27:
v4l2uvc.h:35:21: error: libv4l2.h: No such file or directory

After about 2 hours of searching, I have not found out how to get the file, libv4l2.h.   How do I install mjpg-streamer?

Hi! lyzby

Do
#apt-get install build-essential
and compile it again.

Follow up:  Here's a log entry for a computer that can see the video:

2010-07-31 15:31:27 [/dev/video0] 192.168.100.10 connected via WCS APPLET
2010-07-31 15:33:08 [/dev/video0] 192.168.100.10 disconnected, 101 seconds, 430263 bytes, 4.16 Kbytes/second, 102 frames, 1.01 fps

Note the "connected via WCS APPLET".  The Java applet is on the web server, so why wouldn't it run on all machines?  I guess I don't understand how Java works.

popon--sorry, I didn't notice your post.  I had already done build-essential.  I had to add the lenny backports repository to get past that problem, but encountered another.  The maintainer said that the second problem was a bug.  He has fixed it, and a new svn download (version 99 or higher) compiles and runs fine.

It didn’t go smoothly for me. It is weird when I tried to install and add in new features, it didn’t respond as it should. Keeps giving me error messages and made me wondering where went wrong. And soon after that I realize that I missed out quite a number of important codes of lines that should be included. I guess if problems like mine won’t occur if everyone did it properly without forgetting some modules.
